What is a Chester Step Test?

The Chester Step Test (CST) is a multistage aerobic capacity test. It requires you to step on and off a 30 cm / 12″ step (a standard gym bench). It consists of five levels, each of them with two-minute duration. The test should be discontinued when the candidate reaches around 80% of their calculated age-based heart rate maximum or completes the fifth level, whichever comes first.

How long is my medical valid for?

The Seafarers’ Medical is valid for 2 years unless you are under 18 years of age, where the validity is 1 year.
The HSE Medical, if unrestricted, is valid for 1 year from the issue date. If any restrictions apply, the certificate may be limited to a specific activity or a period of time.
OEUK Medical is usually valid for 2 years.
Recreational diving medicals are issued for 1 year unless particularly stated otherwise.
Asbestos Medicals are valid for 2 years.
Compressed air workers are subject to a monthly or a yearly medical assessment.

When will I know the result of the medical?

The assessment is usually pretty straightforward, and you will know the outcome by the end of your examination.

How long does the medical take?

The duration of the medical is usually 45 minutes, but this can vary slightly depending on the type of medical.

What does my medical involve?

There are different requirements for fitness depending on the purpose of the Medical. In section Medicals, under the chosen type of medical you can find out more about the specific medical itself. At completion of your booking, you will receive a confirmation e-mail with detailed information about the medical you have booked, including all you need to have with you to arrive prepared for your appointment. What do I need to bring with me at the appointment?

Please note that no other forms of ID are acceptable, and neither are photocopies, scans, or other images.
