This type of medical is accepted worldwide as a standard for diving related fitness.
Who needs this medical?
This type of medical is a requirement for any commercial diving work conducted in the UK and its territories under the Diving at Work Regulations 1997. It is regulated by the Health and Safety Executive and this type of medical can be conducted only by an Approved Medical Examiner of Divers (AMED).
Recreational diving instructors, military diving, inshore and offshore non-saturation and saturation diving fall under this category.
What is involved in this assessment?
The assessment includes medical history evaluation and full medical assessment that usually takes approximately 45 min for renewals and slightly longer for initial medicals. The measurements that are taken are height and weight, blood pressure and heart rate, ECG (for initial medicals or if clinically indicated), audiometry and tympanometry, spirometry measurements taken before and after physical exercise test, O₂ saturation and urine dipstick test. The physical exercise test is the Chester step test.
What do I need to bring with me?
Please, bring with you a government issued photographic ID, e.g., passport or driving licence.
If this is an HSE medical renewal, please bring with you your old medical together with any relevant medical notes in case there have been any new medical issues since your last medical (medical notes, discharge letters, prescriptions, etc.).
If this is your very first HSE medical, you need to have the HSE Medical questionnaire for diving at work form signed by your GP beforehand. You can download the form here.
It is an HSE prerequisite, and we cannot proceed further without it. Please, let your GP know that they only need to confirm your medical history and NOT making a decision about your diving related fitness. Depending on the medical history, some further information beforehand may be necessary.
